World number 154 Mikhail Kukushkin comes through as the lucky loser here after a defeat to Yoshihito Nishioka in qualifying. 24-year-old Tommy Paul will have to recalibrate quickly here after initially drawing Grigor Dimitrov but Novak Djokovic’s withdrawal saw Dimitrov move up to the seeds. Paul should fare all the better against 34-year-old Kukushkin, though, with the American in dome of the form of his life at a career-high ATP world ranking of 39th. Paul won his first ATP title late last year at the Stockholm Open and he took that form into Melbourne this year, beating Kukushkin in straight sets in the first round of the Australian Open. Take the American to win outright, although straight sets is likely once again.
