THE LOWDOWN

MAXIMILIAN MARTERER

26-year-old Maximilian Marterer set a career-high ATP world ranking of 45th back in 2018 but the German is currently 228th in the world after a serious climb down. Marterer reached the round of 16 at Roland-Garros in that 2018 season before defeat to eventual champion Rafael Nadal.

TAYLOR FRITZ

24-year-old Taylor Fritz is up to his career-high ATP world ranking at 22nd after an incredible last few months on tour last season. The American beat the imperious Alexander Zverev at Indian Wells to reach the semi-finals there as well as reaching the quarter-finals at the Paris Masters and finishing runner-up to Mari Cilic in St. Petersburg. Fritz took that form straight into this season with two wins over world number 12 Cam Norrie and number 11 Felix Auger-Aliassime at the ATP Cup. It took five sets for Novak Djokovic to oust Fritz here last year in a third round marathon clash with both players suffering injuries.

THE PREDICTION

Marterer was the winner of the only previous meeting between these two in a shock three-set victory at the Miami Open back in 2019 but Fritz is in some special form right now. The American is a serious dark horse for the quarter-finals if the draw falls his way with only the likes of Daniil Medvedev and Rafael Nadal almost guaranteed to stop him. Take him to win outright here considering Marterer’s record but this should fall in three.
