THE LOWDOWN
MARTINA TREVISAN
28-year-old Martina Trevisan will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 31st no matter the outcome of this match after beating in-form Aliaksandra Sasnovicb in straight sets on Sunday. The Italian is riding a nine-match winning streak after claiming her maiden WTA title at the Rabat Open two weeks ago and she is, remarkably, yet to drop a set at Roland-Garros in what is her second stunning out-of-the-blue run to the quarter-finals. Trevisan lost to eventual champion Iga Swiatek at this stage of her run in 2020.
LEYLAH FERNANDEZ
19-year-old Leylah Fernandez looks in the kind of form that saw her storm to the final of the US Open last September after a thrilling three-set victory over Amanda Anisimova. The Canadian will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 14th after also stunning another title contender in Belinda Bencic in the third round. Fernandez won the Girls’ Singles here as a junior back in 2019.
THE PREDICTION
This is a really tough call in a first meeting between Martina Trevisan, who clearly finds an extra few gears at Roland-Garros, and Leylah Fernandez, who looks to be getting back into her US Open groove. The Canadian beat a who’s who of former world number ones and Grand Slam champions on her way to finishing runner-up to Emma Raducanu in New York and she could be one of the few players left in the draw capable of stopping the irrepressible Iga Swiatek on Saturday. However, Trevisan has not dropped a set in eight matches and she should not be underestimated here after ousting an impressive Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Fernandez’ results are that bit more impressive, though, and taking her to win outright here seems a reasonable risk.
