THE PREDICTION
19-year-old Ukrainian prospect Marta Kostyuk is playing her first tournament since the invasion of her homeland and she will be well-supported alongside many of her compatriots at Indian Wells. The pressure could tell on her for the better or worse but it is likelier for the better after she set a career-high WTA world ranking of 49th last month following a superb Australian Open campaign. Kostyuk almost bested the eighth seed Paula Badosa in Melbourne but she has struggled to find that level since. World number 68 Maryna Zanevska won her first WTA title last season at the Gdynia Open and the Belgian had started this year off well with wins over Petra Martic and Kaja Juvan before losing some momentum. This is a tricky one to call for a myriad of outside factors but backing Kostyuk to win at least a set seems reasonable as the likelier of two capable winners.
