THE LOWDOWN

MARIA SAKKARI

World number six Maria Sakkari was in control of her match against Daria Saville before the Aussie was forced to retire in the first set, meaning the Greek is through to the quarter-finals without dropping a set. 26-year-old Sakkari has lost to the winner of her last two tournaments this season, finishing runner-up to Anett Kontaveit at the St. Petersburg Open and losing to Iga Swiatek in the semi-finals of the Qatar Open. Sakkari has just one WTA title to her name so far from the 2019 Rabat Open.

ELENA RYBAKINA

World number 20 Elena Rybakina should be considered a serious threat to the Indian Wells title now after winning her third-consecutive match in straight sets. The 22-year-old finished runner-up to Ash Barty at Adelaide 1 at the start of the year in her eighth career WTA final, with two titles won at the 2019 Bucharest Open and 2020 Hobart International.

THE PREDICTION

Elena Rybakina had come in with some question marks over her fitness after several recent retirements and walkovers but three impressive wins over Alison Van Uytvanck, two-time Indian Wells champion Victoria Azarenka, and Viktorija Golubic makes her a dangerous draw for Maria Sakkari. Rybakina won their only previous meeting in the semi-finals of the St. Petersburg Open back in 2020, just before the covid-19 pandemic spoiled the Kazakh’s fast-rising trajectory. Sakkari is one of the fiercest warriors on tour and yet it often seems self-doubt can creep into her mind if she goes a few games without any points. The Greek should come through this match at her best level but backing Rybakina to win at least a set given her performances this week looks the shrewd move.
