World number 55 Marcos Giron meets number 56 Lorenzo Musetti here for what could end up a proper first round thriller. 28-year-old Giron is a Californian native who should garner plenty of support on Thursday, especially after recently taking some of the best results of his career in wins over Pablo Carreno Busta and Taylor Fritz last month. 20-year-old Musetti was a stand-out prospect in 2020 but after a season of two halves last year his confidence looks to be growing back. He was unlucky to meet Novak Djokovic in the first round of the Dubai Tennis Championships last time out but a recent win over Hubert Hurkacz at the Rotterdam Open is very impressive. This is a real head-scratcher as Musetti is just as likely to win through comfortably in two as he is to crumple under Giron’s measured pressure. Backing the Italian to win at least a set, even if he loses, seems the wise move here.
