World number eight Daniil Medvedev has finished runner-up here in Melbourne in the past two seasons: in straight sets to Novak Djokovic in 2021 and from two sets up to Rafael Nadal in last year’s thriller. The 26-year-old claimed his maiden Grand Slam title from Djokovic at the US Open in 2021 in one of the most complete performances in a major final in recent times but that was the last time we truly saw the Russian’s imperious best tennis, at least consistently. Becoming a father for the first time late last year may refocus the former world number one in 2023 but it remains to be seen how well he will fare at the Australian Open this year, with his last victory over a top 10 player coming here last season against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semi-finals.
THE PREDICTION
World number 60 Marcos Giron has been enjoying some solid recent form on tour but Medvedev’s level should be too high for the 29-year-old over five sets. A three-set quarter-final defeat to Cam Norrie on Thursday could have been level enough to see the American trouble the third round but a straight-sets defeat to Medvedev in their only previous encounter suggests more of the same here. Back the Russian, in need of a big opening statement, to take this in three.
