THE PREDICTION

World number 18 Madison Keys conceded just five games to Ellen Perez on Monday to get her San Diego Open campaign underway. The former world number seven started the season off on fire after struggling for the past few years, claiming the Adelaide 2 title before a superb run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open was ended by eventual champion Ash Barty. World number 11 Daria Kasatkina put in a similarly comfortable performance against Laylah Fernandez on Tuesday, an altogether more impressive opening win in San Diego, in keeping with recent title-winning campaigns at the Silicon Valley Classic and Granby Open. Kasatkina’s last visit to California was a fruitful one but she has struggled to beat Keys in the past, with her three-set victory over the American at the start of this season her first in a lop-sided 6-1 head-to-head record.

The sensible option here is backing Keys to win at least a set, as she has done in each of their seven matches played, but if pushed for a winner the Russian may just scrape this.
