18-year-old Jakub Mensik set a career-high ATP world ranking of 69th earlier this month after an excellent start to his first full debut season on tour. The Czech finished runner-up to Karen Khachanov in two tight sets at the Qatar Open in February, having stunned Andrey Rublev, Gael Monfils and Andy Murray en-route, but he is so far untested on clay at this level. World number 58 Yannick Hanfmann upset Lorenzo Musetti to reach the third round here last season and he backed that up with a career-best run to the quarter-finals in Rome, beating the aforementioned Rublev and Taylor Fritz en-route. The 32-year-old has struggled to find his best level on his favoured clay so far this swing, suggesting an upset could be in the offing here, but back him to earn at least a set with the greater experience in Madrid’s unique conditions.
