World number 70 Luca Van Assche beat this weeks’ top seed Arthur Fils to win the 2021 Roland-Garros Boy’s Singles title on his favoured clay but his improvements on hardcourts this season have been noted. The 19-year-old is certainly in the mix for the Next Gen ATP Finals title this week alongside countryman Fils and Switzerland’s Dominic Stricker but it would take some doing in conditions that better-suit his peers. Van Assche beat Botic van de Zandschulo at the Moselle Open earlier this month and then overcame an exhausted Stan Wawrinka to reach the quarter-finals, bringing in some strong recent form, but he faces a really tough opener here against the lowest ranked player here. 20-year-old Abedallah Shelbayh will receive a huge following this week in Jeddah as the only Arab player in the draw and he comes in at a career-high of 185th in the rankings, with every milestone a first for his native Jordan.
Shelbayh stunned Hugo Gaston at the Moselle Open, no mean feat against a Frenchman in Metz, earlier this month and his strong work on the Challenger circuit this summer has earned his place here. The conditions and crowd suit Shelbayh but Van Assche should find a way through. Back Shelbayh to earn at least a set or take Shelbayh to win a set but Van Assche to eventually take the points.
