THE PREDICTION
World number 13 Taylor Fritz is a confident all-courter but clay is his weakest surface, with each of his eight ATP titles coming on the faster courts. The 26-year-old suffered a humiliating straight-sets defeat to Thiago Seyboth Wild early at the Miami Open three weeks ago to at least given him time to prepare for the clay swing but this looks a really tough opener over Lorenzo Musetti, who is at his best in these conditions. World number 24 Musetti has reached the round of 16 at Roland-Garros in two of the past three seasons before defeats to Novak Djokovic, in 2021, and Carlos Alcaraz last summer, to prove his credentials here but he trails Fritz 0-2 in their head-to-head and he also brings a two-match winning streak into Monte-Carlo after a surprising early exit at Estoril. Both players are desperate for a deep run to boost shot confidence so back Fritz to earn at least a set as the likelier the two to keep his nerve.
