THE PREDICTION

Former world number one Naomi Osaka is yet to drop a set this week in Doha as she begins to develop her once customary grit in these conditions. The 26-year-old returned from an extended break from the sport, initially due to stress and mental health concerns but then to have her first child, and she could barely have endured a tougher run of fixtures so far for a real baptism of fire. A defeat to Caroline Garcia on her return to the Australian Open last month was avenged in style on Monday and the Japanese passed a significant test on Tuesday by winning her first back-to-back matches since 2022 in a competitive result over Petra Martic.

World number 37 Lesia Tsurenko is a dangerous opponent capable of an upset off her own steam, although she was aided by an out-of-sorts Ons Jabeur in her win on Tuesday, but Osaka should be considered a serious title threat on her current trajectory – if she can avoid fatigue in this incredibly tight campaign. Osaka leads their head-to-head 2-0 at tour level, although those stats are hardly useful at this stage of her comeback, but take her to win outright here for caution’s sake.

TIP: NAOMI OSAKA TO WIN
