Aptly-named Katie Volynets received a wildcard to the main draw of Indian Wells after some recent wins on the ITF circuit over the last few months. The 20-year-old lost in straight sets to Petra Martic in the first round here last October, in the delayed edition of Indian Wells, but she fares a better chance of reaching the second round this time against world number 69 Arantxa Rus. 31-year-old Rus recently beat Veronika Kudermetova at the Qatar Open and she came close to shocking Tamara Zidansek in the first round of the Australian Open to suggest she is at a working level high enough to avoid the upset here. Still, this match is a tricky call and possibly worth leaving alone altogether. Backing native Californian Volynets to win at least a set with the full support of a home crowd looks a tempting option, though.
