THE LOWDOWN
World number seven Coco Gauff claimed the third WTA title of her career at the Auckland Classic last week to take a crucial five-match winning streak into the Australian Open. The 18-year-old qualified for the WTA Finals in Singles and Doubles late last season to set another impossibly high bar at so young and she set a career-high WTA world ranking of fourth after finishing runner-up to Iga Swiatek at Roland-Garros in her first Grand Slam final. The world is the teenager’s oyster from here on in and she is one of the stand-out title contenders here in Melbourne behind fair favourite Iga Swiatek. Gauff suffered a shock first round exit to Qiang Wang here last season but she should be able to better her best run to the round of 16 back in 2020.
THE PREDICTION
World number 48 Katerina Siniakova will be gearing up for another title challenge in the Women’s Doubles alongside Barbora Krejcikova here in Melbourne but recently the Czech’s singles performances have markedly improved. The 26-year-old took Caroline Garcia to three sets on Wednesday before defeat at Adelaide 2 and she stunned Gauff in straight sets at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals last November to get on the board in a 3-1 head-to-head deficit with the American. Gauff may struggle early-on here with an unimaginable amount of pressure on her shoulders but ultimately she should be coming through the winner here and she will be better for it moving forwards.
