THE PREDICTION
This promises to be a thrilling clash between world number 17 Karen Khachanov and number 30 Cam Norrie, both of whom have set career-highs of eighth after winning Masters titles. 28-yearold Norrie won his most prestigious of five ATP titles at Indian Wells in 2021 but he is no slouch on clay, with last season’s Rio 500 claimed at the hands of Carlos Alcaraz after the Spaniard beat him to the Buenos Aires trophy the week before.
27-year-old Khachanov claimed his Masters title in Paris in 2018 but he suffered a long trophy drought after that, snapped in Zhuhai last September and backed up in Doha in February where he impressed in picking up his sixth overall. The Russian is also very comfortable on clay, perhaps more so than Norrie, but both players come in cold on the surface to make this very interesting. Norrie beat Khachanov en-route to his other clay title claimed in Lyon in 2021, leading the Russian 2-1 on clay, but the pair share a very competitive 3-3 record overall that was last settled in four sets by Khachanov at Roland-Garros in 2022. Take Khachanov, with the better form this season, to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.
