36-year-old Kaia Kanepi made short work of American wildcard Robin Montgomery to reach the second round in straight sets. BELINDA BENCIC
World number 25 Belinda Bencic claimed double gold at the Tokyo Olympic Games last season, winning in the Women’s Singles and then Women’s Doubles alongside Viktorija Golubic for Switzerland. The 25-year-old has struggled to impose herself on tour in recent months but she has needed beating by top opponents so far in 2022. Bencic’s first title was claimed at the 2015 Canadian Masters as a teenager.
THE PREDICTION
Belinda Bencic won the only previous meeting with Kaia Kanepi in straight sets in the first round of Wimbledon back in 2019 but this looks a really tight rematch. The Swiss number one has lost to top 10 players and future top 10 players so far this season in Amanda Anisimova and Clara Tauson and three sets looks likely here as she continues to search for some consistency.
