THE PREDICTION

World number six Aryna Sabakenka looks to be getting her so-far wayward game under control, finally, after what has been a torrid season for the former number two. The 24-year-old conceded just four games to Catherine Harrison on Tuesday to get a promising US Open campaign underway but she has a long way to go if she is to defend her vast amount of ranking points from last season’s run to the semi-finals here, where she lost in three sets to Leylah Fernandez. This looks a really tricky tie for the Belarusian against notorious giant-killer Kaia Kanepi, who has been enjoying some serious swansong form this season at 37 years old. The world number 34 was unlucky to miss out on a seeding after recently finishing runner-up to Liudmila Samsonova at the Citi Open but perhaps she prefers it this way after stunning the likes of Garbine Muguruza, Angelique Kerber and a certain Aryna Sabalenka at Grand Slams this season.

The Estonian beat Sabalenka in three sets at the Australian Open on her way to a three-set defeat to Iga Swiatek and she leads the 6th seed 2-0 in their head-to-head record. Sabalenka at 100% should be returning the favour here but the shrewd and sensible move looks to be taking Kanepi to win at least a set as the just-about likelier of two very capable victors.
