THE PREDICTION
22-year-old Sebastian Baez brings a career-high ATP world ranking of 27th into the Astana Open and he received a bye to the round of 16 as the second seed here, with his excellent 2023 going well under the radar. The Argentine won back-to-back tournaments this summer, one on clay and a first on hardcourts, in Kitzbuhel and Winston-Salem to bring his career total to four ATP titles - already emulating the likes of fellow diminutive Argentine Diego Schwartzman. 24-year-old Jurij Rodionov can break his career-high ATP world ranking of 100th with one more win here in Astana but whilst a comeback over Gregoire Barrere is a strong result in these conditions he still looks some way off his opponent’s level. Baez made it 12 wins on the spin before a well-contested defeat to Daniil Medvedev in the third round of the US Open and a wise break since then should see him a serious challenger here. Back Baez to win in straight sets.
