THE PREDICTION

This could be a thriller between big-serving veteran John Isner and fast-paced rising star Holger Rune as they meet for the first time on tour. 37-year-old Isner beat Federico Delbonis in comfortable straight sets on Tuesday and he was in serious form at Wimbledon last month before coming up against Jannik Sinner in the third round. World number 33 Holger Rune is seeded 28th in New York and he played like it with a straight-sets victory over Peter Gojowczyk, who reached the round of 16 last season, for a first convincing on a hardcourt in some time. The Dane is at his best on the clay, where he stunned Stefanos Tsitsipas to reach the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros, but it is hard to see him breaking Isner’s serve enough over five sets here. That means tiebreaks could be in order, and they make for a suitable way to avoid picking a tight result. Back Isner to win at least two sets and for at least one tiebreak in the match here.
