THE PREDICTION

World number seven Jessica Pegula came back from a set down to beat the defending Canada Masters champion Camila Giorgi on Thursday, saving match point against the Italian in a clutch performance. The 28-year-old is enjoying by far the best season of her career, with quarter-finals reached at the Australian Open and Roland-Garros as well as a first Masters final reached at the Madrid Open back in May, but a second WTA title still eludes her. World number one Iga Swiatek has been a thorn in Pegula’s side at a few tournaments this season but with the Pole out of the draw the way is clearer. Pegula holds all the tools required to win a first Masters title in these conditions, particularly the mentality to not underestimate world number 46 Yulia Putintseva. The 27-year-old overcame in-form Alison Riske on Thursday after a huge performance against Paula Badosa, who retired from the second set of their second round clash, but this should be the end of the line for the Kazakh. Three sets seem about as likely as two here but Pegula can be backed to win outright.
