THE PREDICTION

World number 42 Jack Draper took the first from Christopher O’Connell before letting the match get away from him in a three-set defeat. The 22-year-old had come from a remarkable run to the semi-finals of the Mexican Open the week before, where he beat Tommy Paul and Miomir Kecmanovic before a three-set exit to eventual champion Alex de Minaur via a retirement through illness. The Brit made his Masters debut here in Miami three years ago before heat exhaustion saw him receive medical help on-court and that has proven to be symptomatic of his career so far – huge promise hampered by various medical complaints and a series of debilitating injuries.

Draper finished 2023 in fine form, finishing runner-up in his maiden final to Adrian Mannarino, and he started 2024 in the same vein, finishing runner-up to Jiri Lehecka in Adelaide, but world number 78 Taro Daniel matches that effort by finishing runner-up to Alejandro Tabilo at the Auckland Classic a week later. The 31-year-old has struggled since, though, with just two wins from eight matches suggesting this first meeting with Draper is the Brit’s to lose. Take Draper to win outright but it is probably worth cautiously leaving this one out of an accumulator.

TIP: JACK DRAPER TO WIN
