THE PREDICTION
World number two Iga Swiatek beat Mai Hontama in straight sets in her first match back on tour since losing in the round of 16 at the US Open earlier this month but it was not as straightforward as it should have been. A 6-4 7-5 victory over the home hopeful in Tokyo on Wednesday is a much closer result than we have become used to since the start of last season but the Pole should be better for an early wake-up call and confident in her ability to extend a convincing head-to-head here. World number 19 Veronika Kudermetova beat Kayla Day in straight sets on Wednesday to take back-to-back wins for the first time since the Berlin Open in June but she has drawn the shortest straw in the competition here just as confidence was returning to her game. The Russian enjoyed the form of her career earlier this year and she should be improved in weeks to come but she has never scored more than six games in a match with Swiatek, losing all four of their encounters comfortably including two this season. Take Swiatek to win in two.
