THE LOWDOWN

World number one Iga Swiatek is the clear favourite to win the WTA Finals this weekend in Fort Worth after claiming a remarkable eight WTA titles this season, including two Grand Slams from Roland-Garros and the US Open. The 21-year-old has more than double the ranking points than world number two Ons Jabeur, whom she beat to win her first US Open last month, and she has lost just eight times in 2022 – a year that saw her break this century’s winning streak record with 37 victories on the spin. Swiatek won six tournaments in a row during that remarkable run, stretching from March to July, including four Masters titles from Qatar, Indian Wells, Miami and Rome.

World number eight Daria Kasatkina has enjoyed her best, most consistent season on tour in a year that saw her come out as gay. The 25-year-old threw off those particular shackles to win her fifth and sixth WTA titles at the Silicon Valley Classic and Granby Open but her most impressive campaign came this summer at Roland-Garros, where she lost in the semi-finals to eventual champion Iga Swiatek – her opening opponent at the WTA Finals on her debut.

THE PREDICTION

Daria Kasatkina only just snuck the last remaining WTA Finals place at fellow Russian Veronika Kudermetova’s expense last week but she will be a tough match for any player this week in Fort Worth. The 25-year-old’s uber-consistent game makes her a dependable player to back on tour but she can often get outplayed or overpowered by the very best on tour. If you have to play Iga Swiatek at the WTA Finals, at least get it out of the way. The Pole is by far and away the best player on tour right now and she has already beaten Kasatkina four times this season, each in straight sets. Back Swiatek to take this opener in two.
