The Pole also won the Rome Masters last season on her favoured clay, on which she stormed to the Roland-Garros title in 2020, but her run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open in January is proof that she is developing a huge game for hardcourts too.

World number 50 Anhelina Kalinina is one of several Ukrainian tennis players in the spotlight at Indian Wells this fortnight and she handled it well with a straight-sets victory over Clara Burel in the first round. The 25-year-old reached her first WTA tour final last season at the Hungarian Open finishing runner up to Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva.

World number four Iga Swiatek means business in 2022 and she takes a five-match winning streak, featuring wins over the likes of Aryna Sabalenka, Maria Sakkari and Anett Kontaveit, into a successive Masters tournament with conditions that should suit her powerful game. Anhelina Kalinina will be well-backed as the sympathy for her country’s plight continues but she has drawn a very short straw here.
