THE LOWDOWN

HENRI LAAKSONEN

29-year-old Henri Laaksonen set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 92nd this week after a breakthrough season on tour last year. The Swiss enjoyed some excellent performances at Grand Slams, with defeats of John Millman and Cristian Garin at the US Open bettered by a stunning four-set victory over then world number 11 Roberto Bautista Agut at Roland-Garros. Injury saw Laaksonen pull out of the third round in Paris in what was a promising campaign.

DANIIL MEDVEDEV

World number two Daniil Medvedev won his first Grand Slam last season with a straight-sets victory over Novak Djokovic at the US Open. The 25-year-old has enjoyed the best of his tennis on the North American hard swing over the last couple of years but he finished runner-up to Djokovic here last season and he faces a strong chance of making a fourth major final later this month. Medvedev won the Davis Cup and ATP Cup last year as part of a superb Russian generation but he also claimed a first title on grass in Mallorca that could signal a changing of the guard at Wimbledon later this year.

THE PREDICTION

29-year-old Henri Laaksonen has drawn possibly the shortest straw in the Australian Open draw right now against US Open champion and world number two Daniil Medvedev. 25-year-old Medvedev lost a tight first match of the year to the ever-impressive Ugo Humbert at the ATP Cup but he markedly improved with every passing round and should be fine-tuned ahead of a very promising campaign in Melbourne. The Russian will be keen to pounce on the ill will surrounding world number one Novak Djokovic here and upgrade his runner-up medal from last season, with a three-set victory here a statement he is likely to make.
