World number 113 Heather Watson tends to be at her best in conditions like Indian Wells’ slow hardcourts, with her last two of a total four WTA titles coming at the Monterrey Open in 2016 and the Acapulco Open back in 2020. The 29-year-old qualified well to reach the first round but this will be a tough place for a first meeting with Tereza Martincova, who is only two places behind her career-high WTA word ranking of 40th set last month. 27-year-old Martincova beat Elina Svitolina in the first round of the Qatar Open in February and that puts her working level high enough to be considered a fairly solid favourite here. However, Watson’s qualifying form could help her force a decider here so the suitably cautious move is taking Martincova to win at least a set. The Czech could be tentatively backed to win outright, though.
