29-year-old Jordan Thompson set a career-high ATP world ranking of 32nd after finally winning his maiden ATP title at the Los Cabos Open last month. The Aussie put everything he had into a remarkable campaign in Mexico, upsetting Alexander Zverev and Casper Ruud over the weekend and playing a herculean three matches on the Sunday to also lift the doubles title alongside Max Purcell. No wins since is understandable, then, as Thompson gets to grips with a serious career milestone and the exhaustion that comes with it but this looks too steep of a challenge to steady the ship.
Former world number six Gael Monfils reached the round of 16 at Indian Wells with some huge results over Cam Norrie and Hubert Hurkacz before just being edged out by the aforementioned Ruud. The 37-year-old will be well-backed as a popular player in these parts and the conditions should suit his game, although Thompson should be better-recovered than he was last time out at Indian Wells.
