THE PREDICTION
It would be a surprise to see a rally break out here between world number four Daniil Medvedev and former number six Gael Monfils but this match could still be a thrilling watch. 28-year-old Medvedev proved to himself, as much as anyone else, that he can mix it with the best on clay by winning the Italian Open last May but he is still far from his best away from hardcourts.
37-year-old Monfils moved back up to world number 40 this week after a strong March across the Sunshine Double and he came back from a set down to beat lucky loser Aleksandar Vukic on Tuesday, bringing some momentum into this intriguing clash. Medvedev has not played competitively since a hammering by eventual champion Jannik Sinner at the Miami Open two weeks ago and it is a surprise to find that Monfils leads their head-to-head 2-1 as things stand. The Russian, however, has earned at least a set in all of their encounters to offer a suitably cautious alternative to the result.
