THE LOWDOWN
Davis Cup Finals minnows Finland secured the most famous day of their international tennis history on Tuesday with a 2-1 victory over defending champions Canada. Both sides were without their first options, with Canada sorely missing a resurgent Felix Auger-Aliassime in both singles and doubles and Finland missing Emil Ruusuvuori – their only player ranked inside the top 100. 22-year-old Otto Virtanen stepped up to first option to impressively oust Gabriel Diallo after Canadian veteran Milos Raonic took out back-up Patrick Kaukovalta comfortably in the first match and Virtanen returned alongside doubles specialist Harri Heliovaara to give a strong Finnish support something to savour.
Australia beat Czechia 2-1 on Wednesday but they came perilously close to losing 2-0. Captain Lleyton Hewitt put his trust in Jordan Thompson ahead of Max Purcell in the opening match, although both players would likely have lost to an impressive showing by Tomas Machac, before world number 12 Alex de Minaur was forced to fight back from a set down to beat Jiri Lehecka in the second clash. That win set the tone for tie, taking Australia’s excellent doubles partnership of Purcell and Matthew Ebden into a winnable doubles decider.
THE PREDICTION
Finland will do all they can to get world number 69 Emil Ruusuvuori up and running in time for Friday’s semi-final and the 24-year-old will likely play injured to do so. Taking the hit against Alex de Minaur in the second clash allows man of the moment Otto Virtanen a fair crack at taking the lead in the opening rubber against one of, most likely, world numbers 56 Jordan Thompson or 40 Alexei Popyrin. The opening match is the crucial one here, with both teams possessing some strength in doubles, although Australia’s Grand Slam winning pair should have the best of it in a decider. If Virtanen can snatch that opening win this tie will be very interesting until the close but a defeat for Virtanen should see Australia through 2-0. Back Australia, last season’s runners up, to reach the final once again.
