World number 40 Filip Krajinovic beat his fellow Serb Dusan Lajovic in three sets on Thursday to reach the second round of Indian Wells for a fourth-successive appearance. The former world number 26 reached the round of 16 here back in 2019 before losing to Rafael Nadal. Krajinovic beat Nadal on his way to the Paris Masters final back in 2017, though, where he lost to Jack Sock in three sets.
GAEL MONFILS
World number 28 Gael Monfils produced a stunning run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open back in January that was ended by Matteo Berrettini in five thrilling sets. The 25-year-old lost in the first round of the Montpellier Open last time out, with this his first match for over a month. Monfils won the 11th ATP title of his career at the start of the season in Adelaide, his first since a promising double at Montpellier and Rotterdam was stunted by the covid-19 pandemic.
THE PREDICTION
This is an intriguing, likely coupon buster that should be kept well away from an accumulator. World number 28 Gael Monfils’ level at the Australian Open was excellent, refreshingly so from a player who looked to have suffered more from the covid-19 induced suspension of the 2020 season than any other, but he comes in cold here with more than a month off the tour. However, the Frenchman leads this head-to-head record 3-0, with the last two meetings settled in straight sets back in 2020, and he remains the favourite. Taking Monfils to win outright seems a reasonable option, with Krajinovic capable of forcing a decider.
