THE PREDICTION
World number five Andrey Rublev beat Zizou Bergs in straight sets on Tuesday in his first match back on tour since another quarter-final exit at a Grand Slam, his ninth, to eventual champion Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open. The 26-year-old was victorious at the increasingly bizarre Ultimate Tennis Showdown last week in Oslo, useful perhaps in putting Melbourne behind him, and he looks a solid title contender this week in Rotterdam – behind defending champion Sinner.
Former world number six Felix Auger-Aliassime came through two tight tiebreaks to oust Maxime Cressy on Monday but the Canadian would have not been caught in such a tussle at his best. The 23-year-old won his first of four ATP titles in a brilliant 2022 here in Rotterdam, beating Rublev in three sets in the semi-finals, but he has endured a really tough past 12 months or so on tour, with some brief respite at the Basel Indoors last October where he defended well to claim a fifth title. Rublev beat Auger-Aliassime to win the Open 13 this time two years ago, just a week after their clash in Rotterdam, to lead their head-to-head 3-1 and the Russian can be backed to edge a tight contest here.
