THE PREDICTION

37-year-old John Isner reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon back in 2018 before defeat to eventual runner-up Kevin Anderson in five gruelling sets, the fifth of which was decided at 24-26. The big-serving veteran claimed the 16th ATP title of his career at last season’s Atlanta Open, with 14 of his career total coming on home soil including his sole Masters title from the 2018 Miami Open. Four of the American’s 16 ATP titles have come at the Hall of Fame Open in Newport on grass.

World number 207 Enzo Couacaud has drawn one of the shorter straws here but he will be a bundle of energy on his Wimbledon debut after qualifying well this week. The 27-year-old made the most of his overall Grand Slam debut last summer at Roland-Garros, beating Egor Gerasimov in straight sets before losing to Pablo Carreno Busta in four, and that plus Isner’s lack of grass-court practice suggests taking the American to win outright is a suitably cautious move.
