THE PREDICTION

Both world number 32 Elise Mertens and number 34 Danielle Collins are players with career-high rankings that better reflect the levels they can reach on court. Former world number seven Collins was runner-up to Ash Barty at the Australian Open as recently as the start of last season but she has only just thrown off the cobwebs this season with a huge run to the quarter-finals at the Canada Masters, where she upset Elina Svitolina and Maria Sakkari before defeat to world number one Iga Swiatek. Former world number 12 Mertens was perhaps the most consistent performer at Grand Slam level outside of the top 10 between 2018 and 2020 but the Belgian seems to have lost a gear or two in recent seasons. A comeback victory over qualifier Mirjam Bjorklund should see her improved in this second round clash but Collins looked fierce and hungry in a 6-2 6-0 dismissal of rising star Linda Fruhvirtova. The American has won each of their last three meetings to take a 3-1 lead, 3-0 on hardcourts, and a straight-sets victory over Mertens in Qatar back in February suggests she can come through in two here.
