THE PREDICTION
World number 34 Donna Vekic beat former number one Karolina Pliskova in three tight sets on Wednesday to look a threat to the next few rounds at the Miami Open. The 27-year-old is one of the streakier players on the WTA tour but she stunned world number two Aryna Sabalenka at the Dubai Masters last month and this victory over Pliskova suggests she is on an intriguing trajectory.
29-year-old Ekaterina Alexandrova brings a career-high WTA world ranking of 16th into Miami despite a three-match losing streak, with her last two defeats to Yulia Putintseva and Magdalena Frech wholly avoidable. The Russian started 2024 in serious form, reaching the semi-finals of the Adelaide International and the Linz Open final before defeats to eventual champion Jelena Ostapenko in each, but it remains to be seen if she can rediscover that mojo here. Alexandrova beat Vekic in three very tight sets en-route to the Linz final in February and the pair share a tight 2-2 head-to-head that suggests another scrap here. Back Vekic to earn at least a set, given her opening performance, to leave the victor up to chance.
