DANIIL MEDVEDEV
26-year-old Daniil Medvedev will play his first tournament as the newly-crowned world number one at Indian Wells, becoming the first man outside the ‘Big Four’ to do so since Andy Roddick in 2004. Medvedev won his first Grand Slam title last season at the US Open with a three-set victory over Novak Djokovic. The Russian finished runner-up at the Australian Open for a second-successive season, this time to Rafael Nadal in five thrilling sets.
TOMAS MACHAC
World number 158 Tomas Machac came through an intriguing first round clash with Alexei Popyrin in straight sets on Thursday. The 21-year-old reached the second round of the Australian Open in January amongst some solid form at the Davis Cup last year and some success on the Challenger circuit.
THE PREDICTION
World number one Daniil Medvedev has been in excellent form this season but arguably not quite at his very best. His second defeat to Rafael Nadal in 2022, in straight sets at the Mexican Open last month, was as much about the differing self-belief levels between the two as it was about Nadal’s ability to combat Medvedev’s uber-flat forehand but the Russian may struggle to hit the ground running here against Czech youngster Tomas Machac. There is the slightest scent of an upset here but it would be a surprise to see Machac take more than a set, making backing Medvedev to win outright the uninspiring but sensible call.
