World number 42 Katerina Siniakova provided the biggest shock of the Qatar Masters so far with a straight-sets victory over second seed Coco Gauff taking her up to 2-5 in their head-to-head record. The Czech has enjoyed some of her better singles form over the past six or so months but a win of this size should do wonders for her confidence as, so it seems, has splitting from long-term doubles partner Barbora Krejcikova at the start of this year. Former world number seven Danielle Collins is in a strong moment of her own, though, after announcing that this season will be her last. The 30-year-old upset out-of-sorts Veronika Kudermetova in the first round before an impressive straight-sets victory over Marie Bouzkova on Tuesday and she has looked excellent in recent three-set defeats to Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina.
Collins would not have been looking forward to a clash with Gauff but this surprise fixture should boost her belief in a special run here in Doha. The American beat Siniakova in straight sets at the Billie Jean King Cup back in November and she can be backed to win outright despite Siniakova’s efforts yesterday.
