17-year-old Coco Gauff is currently one place behind her career-high WTA world ranking of 16th after a strong start to the new season. The American lost to the eventual champion of her first two tournaments in Adelaide, Ash Barty and Madison Keys, before a brief slump at the Australian Open. However, Gauff beat Paula Badosa to reach the quarter-finals of the Qatar Open last time out before losing to Maria Sakkari there.

Barring a shock loss to Qiang Wang in the first round of the Australian Open it has taken players at the very top of the sport to beat Coco Gauff this season. World number 87 Claire Liu is set to continue a steady progression up the rankings this year and beyond but it would be a surprise to see 17-year-old Gauff crash out on US soil with the likely vast majority of the crowd on her side between two Americans.
