World number 98 Claire Liu is capable of much better tennis than her current deflated ranking suggests and this could be a strong week for the 23-year-old after a straight-sets opener over Yeon Woo Ku. The American set a career-high WTA world ranking of 52nd at the start of this season after a strong end to last season, including runs to the quarter-finals of the Tokyo Open and the semi-finals at the Jasmin Open, but it has been a lacklustre year so far. 32-year-old Arantxa Rus set her career-high of 41st back in August after finally breaking her duck with a first tour-level title won at the Hamburg Open. The Dutchwoman had lost each of her next four matches at this level since that career day but a straight-sets victory over Na-lae Han on Monday should see her improved. Hardcourt conditions favour Liu and her Chinese heritage should help her receive the lion’s share of the support here. Back Liu to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
