THE LOWDOWN

MAN UTD

Manchester United supporters, players and their manager would have taken their 1-0 loss at home to Arsenal at the weekend and that itself speaks volumes. The Red Devils were once again entirely toothless, which is often the case when they attempt to be so defensive because they haven’t been able to play a well balanced match pretty much throughout Erik ten Hag’s reign.

They are, though, preparing for an FA Cup final against city rivals Manchester City at the end of this month at Wembley Stadium and could also still finish in the top seven and qualify for European competition. However, in order to qualify for Europe, due to their horrific goal difference, they will pretty much need to win this one, though.

NEWCASTLE

Eddie Howe has been under pressure at times this season but that is perhaps due to his own excellent performance as Newcastle United manager with expectations rising quicker than they should have done. To get the Magpies into a top six finish with the injuries and extra games this season is yet another very good job by the former Bournemouth boss.

Newcastle come into this one on the back of a fairly frustrating 1-1 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion at St James’ Park at the weekend. Newcastle went behind early on to a Joel Veltman strike before Sean Longstaff equalised in first-half stoppage-time. That means they have now suffered just one defeat in their last eight matches since returning from the March international break.

THE TEAM NEWS

MAN UTD

Erik ten Hag has said that Lisandro Martinez will return to Manchester United’s first-team for this one if he doesn’t pick up a further niggle in the training before Newcastle’s visit.

Ten Hag has also said ‘we’ll see’ with regards to the fitness of attacking duo Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes and England forward Marcus Rashford.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Onana; Dalot, Casemiro, Evans, Wan-Bissaka; Mainoo, Eriksen; Antony, Fernandes, Alejandro Garnacho; Hojlund

UNAVAILABLE: Varane (Injured), Lindelof (Injured), Maguire (Injured), Malacia (Injured), Shaw (Injured), Mount (Injured), Diallo (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Fernandes (Injured), Rashford (Injured), Martial (Injured)

NEWCASTLE

Eddie Howe confirmed that key striker Alexander Isak missed training earlier this week with illness and there will have to be a late call on whether he could be available for this one.

Howe has also said that fellow forward Callum Wilson also missed training and is expected to return to Newcastle’s squad for their final day clash against Brentford.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Dubravka; Livramento, Krafth, Burn, Hall; Longstaff, Bruno Guimaraes, Anderson; Murphy, Isak, Gordon

UNAVAILABLE: Botman (Injured), Schar (Injured), Lascelles (Injured), Targett (Injured), Tonali (Suspended), Willock (Injured), Miley (Injured), Wilson (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Isak (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

It is a bit of a shootout for the top seven this one with Chelsea surely likely to pick up three points in their next two matches. Newcastle will go to Old Trafford on the back of some truly excellent form and their cohesive attacking patterns of play are likely to cause a lot of issues to Manchester United. However, if both Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford do return for United then surely they will also do their thing of creating enough to get an undeserved point or three. An entertaining clash for the neutral seems a good bet.

TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
