World number 52 Anastasia Potapova claimed her maiden WTA title at the Istanbul Open back in April and after a brief lull she reached the semi-finals in Lausanne and Hamburg on clay before finishing runner-up to Marie Bouzkova at the Prague Open on a hardcourt. That kind of multi-surface form makes the Russian a real threat in New York, as does a three-set defeat to Simona Halep at the Cincinnati Open last time out, and this looks a tough opener for Claire Liu. The world number 82 reached a first tour final at the Rabat Open back in May but she has since won just two of her last seven matches at tour-level. Potapova is one of a plethora of youngsters looking to emulate Emma Raducanu’s success here last season and she can be backed to win this match outright, probably in two.
