THE PREDICTION
World number six Maria Sakkari would have been forgiven for a slow start, even shock exit, in her first match back since finally winning her second WTA title at the Guadalajara Masters last weekend but she conceded just four games to Misaki Doi on Thursday. The 28-year-old almost took an extended break from tour after suffering some hugely damaging shock defeats this season but it will be fascinating to see what she can achieve from here, particularly in the next few months as the season draws to an end. Sakkari beat Caroline Garcia comfortably in Guadalajara’s semi-finals last week to make it 2-0 in encounters this season but Garcia still leads their head-to-head 3-2 with two wins this time last season and a first encounter on the Asian swing back in 2017. A straight-sets result over Anhelina Kalinina was a solid start to Garcia’s Tokyo campaign as she also appears to be improving but she has not beaten a top 10 player since she claimed the WTA Finals title last November. Back Sakkari to win at least a set inside an accumulator or risk the outright on its own as we still need more data on the Greek post-title.
