29-year-old Caroline Garcia came into the Italian Open at a career-high WTA world ranking of fourth but she needed three sets to oust Ana Bogdan on Thursday in a continuation of some recent shaky form. The Frenchwoman is one of the best on clay when she finds some rhythm but she has so far failed to win back-to-back matches on the surface since the start of last month and she has suffered a few shock defeats since finishing runner-up to Donna Vekic at the Monterrey Open. Former world number 33 Camila Osorio is also at her best on clay and she proved it with a brilliant straight-sets victory over Petra Martic on Thursday, backing up a tight three-set result over Varvara Gracheva. The Colombian is far better than her current WTA world ranking of 100 suggests, especially on clay, and she only recently faced Garcia for the first time in the semi-finals of the Lyon Open – losing in straight sets on a hardcourt.
Garcia should be winning this in straight sets at her best but anywhere below that makes her vulnerable. The suitably cautious pick is taking the fourth seed to earn at least a set inside an accumulator and the reasonable risk is taking the same option for Osorio on its own.
