This will be a fascinating and likely thrilling rematch between defending Houston Open champion Frances Tiafoe and top seed Ben Shelton, who beat Tiafoe in four sets to reach the semi-finals of the US Open last summer. Former number 10 Tiafoe will be pleased with his week in Houston after claiming four wins on the spin for the first time since New York but he will be desperate to avenge the most painful defeat of his career – more so than his loss to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals the previous year – against Shelton’s improving level on clay.
21-year-old Shelton came back from a set down to upset a proper clay-courter in Tomas Martin Etcheverry on Saturday whilst Tiafoe has looked suddenly resolute, for the first time this season, in beating Jordan Thompson and Luciano Darderi.
