THE LOWDOWN

This could end up the match of the entire tournament so far, with the experience of Australia’s seasoned doubles duo tackling world number one Novak Djokovic an enticing notion, but Alex de Minaur and Ajla Tomljanovic need to dig deep in the singles to make it happen. Djokovic looked to be struggling with a concerning wrist injury against Jiri Lehecka on Tuesday that could see him withdraw from the United Cup to rest ahead of his title defence at the Australian Open but should he play he is more than likely to have too much for Alex de Minaur. Serbia’s back-up singles option, Hamad Medjedovic, is a serious threat in his own right after winning the Next Gen ATP Finals in November but former Next Gen runner-up De Minaur should be able to edge that first encounter in front of raucous partisan support. The key clash will be between Ajla Tomljanovic and Olga Danilovic, with Tomljanovic still recovering from her lengthy absence from tour, to suggest that this doubles match may not quite make it.

THE PREDICTION

It is certainly worth waiting for the singles results to come through before taking on this clash, then, but should the hosts manage to weather them the tables turn quite dramatically. Doubles world number one Storm Sanders and number four Matthew Ebden make up the second-strongest duo at the United Cup, at least in terms of ranking might, and they blew away the top duo on Monday with a 6-3 6-1 victory over defending champions Jessica Pegula and Rajeev Ram. Hunter and Ebden also beat Great Britain in straight sets to keep their hopes alive after two defeats in the singles for De Minaur and Tomljanovic but they need better luck this time around if they are to face Djokovic and Danilovic, who combined well to beat China in a deciding tiebreak on Sunday. If the tie is live at 1-1 back Australia to edge a thriller in front of their home fans, with Djokovic’s powers in doubles exposed a little in defeat to Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego at the Davis Cup in November.

TIP: (IF THE TIE IS 1-1) AUSTRALIA TO WIN
