17-year-old Ashlyn Krueger received a wildcard to her Indian Wells debut last October but she qualified the hard way this week with two strong victories over Panna Udvardy and Christina McHale. The world number 542 is the lowest-ranked woman in the draw and she will be backed to the hilt as both a home hopeful and serious underdog against world number 47 Yulia Putintseva. 27-year-old Putintseva won her second WTA title last season at the Budapest Open and she also finished runner-up in her home tournament at the Nur-Sultan Open in Kazakhstan. The former world number 27 has not won a match since the last Indian Wells, though, which provides just the right amount of intrigue in this first round clash for an upset. Leave this match well away from an accumulator but consider taking Krueger to snatch at least a set with the full support of a partisan crowd.
