THE PREDICTION
Arthur Fils and Luca Van Assche, both 19, know plenty about each other’s games as compatriots who have played doubles together on a number of occasions this season. Fils is the clear favourite in this clash at a career-high ATP world ranking of 36th, practically double that of world number 70 Van Assche, but the pair are seeds one and two in Jeddah and this first competitive meeting at tour level could go any which way. Fils won all three of his group stage matches this week, coming back from a choppy five set opener over Luca Nardi to coast past Flavio Cobolli before a strong showing in a tough four-setter against Dominic Stricker. Van Assche lost his second round robin to Hamad Medjedovic either side of a reasonable showing against eighth seed Abedallah Shelbayh and yesterday’s mammoth five-set victory over Alex Michelsen but he should have fared better against a player already out of the running.
Fils has the better results on hardcourts this season, with Van Assche a clear future star on clay, and the top seed can be backed to exert dominance by the end of the fight. Back Fils to reach the final.
