19-year-old Arthur Fils came into the Next Gen ATP Finals as the clear favourite for the title at a career-high ATP world ranking of 36th but he was made to work hard for his opening win in five sets by Luca Nardi. Fils is the only player in Jeddah with a title to his name after winning his maiden trophy at the Lyon Open on clay in May but he has since impressed on hardcourts too, finishing runner-up to Alexander Bublik at the European Open last month having beaten Stefanos Tsitsipas en-route. World number 100 Flavio Cobolli has played just 14 tour-level matches at 21 years old but he caused a real upset on Tuesday with a four-set victory over the vastly more experienced Dominic Stricker. The Italian has enjoyed some strong form on the Challenger circuit in recent months but Fils should be better for an early scare against Nardi. Back the Frenchman to win outright, probably in four.
