THE PREDICTION

World number 11 Jessica Pegula came back from a set down to beat Liudmila Samsonova in impressive fashion on Tuesday in her first match since losing the Madrid Open final on Saturday. The 28-year-old can break the top 10 for a first time this week if she goes one round better than Garbine Muguruza, unless someone behind her makes a huge push beyond her in Rome. This is another seriously tough draw for the American with in-form Anhelina Kalinina coming off an excellent victory over Madison Keys. The 25-year-old lost to Jil Teichmann in the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open last week after beating Muguruza, Emma Raducanu and Sloane Stephens and she also reached that stage of the Charleston Open last month.

Kalinina is in the form of her career right now but so is Pegula, who has won both of their tour-level meetings, and recently, at the Australian Open and Miami Open this season. Back Pegula to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners, with Kalinina just about favoured by these conditions in Rome.
