THE LOWDOWN

AMANDA ANISIMOVA

Former world number 21 Amanda Anisimova is on the express train back to her best form after winning her second career title at Melbourne 2 two weeks ago. The 20-year-old overcame an out-of-sorts Belinda Bencic in straight sets on Wednesday in a marked improvement on her first round performance and she takes a seven-match winning streak into the third round. The American burst onto the scene with a storming run to the semi-finals of Roland-Garros before losing to eventual champion Ash Barty.

NAOMI OSAKA

Reigning champion Naomi Osaka handed Madison Brengle an opening set bagel on Wednesday before winning a more competitive second set against the American. The 24-year-old has conceded just 10 games in Melbourne, with a 5-0 record so far for 2022 after pulling out of the semi-finals of Melbourne 1 two weeks ago. Osaka is a four-time Grand Slam champion already: winning the US Open in 2018 and 2020, and the Australian Open in 2019 and last year.

THE PREDICTION

This is a seriously tough time for Naomi Osaka to meet Amanda Anisimova for a first time on court, with the American well up for the fight after an excellent victory over Belinda Bencic. The former world number one is still not in full control of her huge game but as long as she can find more winners than unforced errors, or even less but so far winners at the key moments, she can survive this encounter by the skin of her teeth. On form, Anisimova looks the likelier player to edge through this and yet Osaka’s legacy almost refuses to be beaten, even hypothetically. There is probably a thrilling deciding tiebreak in this or something equally as nail-biting so take both players to win a set and leave the winner up to chance.
