Donna Vekic advanced to the next round in Beijing after a three set win over Lin Zhu. The Croatian looked to be cruising, winning 10 of the first 11 games to lead by a set and 4-0. However, Zhu fought back, reeling off six games in a row to level the match. Vekic regrouped and finished strongly to wrap up a 6-1 4-6 6-2 victory.

She now goes up against six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek for a place in the round-of-16. Swiatek bolstered her prospects of qualifying for the WTA Finals after beginning her campaign with a dominant win over Xinyu Gao. The Pole, who wont his tournament in 2023, conceded just the one break point on her way to a 6-2 6-3 victory.

Swiatek leads the head-to-head 4-0 and has dropped just one set to Vekic in her career. She should have far too much quality for her opponent once again.
